With the main X-Men series potentially coming to a close with the 2016 film X-Men: Apocalypse, Fox are well and truly keeping their claws sunk into the mutant element of the Marvel Universe.
We’re already looking forward to X-Men: Apocalypse, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, and Channing Tatum as Gambit in 2016 as well as an untitled Wolverine film in 2017. Continuing the franchise we also have an upcoming X-Force film as well as this newly revealed New Mutants title. Spreading into the other Mutant teams should be the breath of life that the X-Men series’ needed.
The New Mutants film has been rumoured for a while, but the announcement that Fox have picked up director Josh Boone for the project is the first solid lead that the project is going ahead.
The question now is that what’s Fox’s plan regarding the New Mutants and X-Force films as New Mutants was relaunched as X-Force after their original 1983 to 1991 run.
Simon Kinberg, 20th Century Fox and writer/producer said:
“We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
