Planetside 2

Insanely huge FPS MMO Planetside 2 finally has a launch date for PlayStation 4.

On the US PlayStation Blog yesterday, Director of Development, Andy Sites announced that after some lengthy beta tests, Planetside 2 is set to launch on the PlayStation 4 as soon as June 23, in Europe and North America.

For those who aren’t familiar, Planetside 2 is an absolutely massive scale MMO where players battle it out against enemy Empires in a grand planetary war. It’s a first person shooter where players must work together to fend off the opposition to complete targeted missions. The game, which has been available on PC for some time now, has set the record for the most players in a first person shooter battle with 1,158 players in a single war.

It’s a free-to-play title too which means no PlayStation Plus membership is required. On the PlayStation blog, Sites explained:

We’ve put a lot of effort into streamlining and improving the feature set so that PS4 players will have the ultimate massive-scale, FPS gaming experience. We’ve also incorporated some unique features that are currently exclusive to the PS4 version, which for example, include the new battle map, Koltyr. We will continue to further improve and enhance the gameplay experience after launch as well. In the weeks and months following the release on June 23rd, players can look forward to frequent game updates, which will include deeper features, holiday events and content, new in-game marketplace items, and much, much more.

The game was originally being developed at Sony Online Entertainment who are now known as Daybreak Game Studio. Currently console exclusive to PlayStation 4, but now the company has become independent, they previously revealed that they’ll now be working on Xbox and mobile releases too:

Effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company. Yes, that means PlayStation and Xbox, mobile and more!

Unfortunately there’s no news just yet whether the massive MMO will make it to Xbox One.

When I heard the news I went digging around for a game manual as I remember the original Planetside being hard to get into and I missed the Planetside 2 beta. The official website has a bunch of decent tutorial videos so I bookmarked it. And because n3rdabl3s are so awesome, here’s the link:
