With Captain Marvel announced and names up in the air over the leading role and the director, who may or may not be Angelina Jolie, who should play the badass blond on the big screen?
Yet another fan favourite has popped up amongst people out there as to who could take up the mantel of the bolt blasting superheroine, Captain Marvel, also known as Carol Danvers. I’ll be running through some of the fan favourites and why they’re being brought to the table, and I’ll try and throw in a few options of my own and maybe a wild card or two! Let’s get this show on the road…
It’s only natural to start with the most recent person put forward.
Let’s start with where the rumour came from. Allegedly, Charlize and Angelina Jolie got chatting at a party about the project and the possibility that Charlize might take up the role as Carol Danvers.
So why Charlize? First of all, if you haven’t seen Mad Max: Fury Road yet, you need to go do that. Right now. Go buy a ticket and just go. Charlize Theron has always been a favourite actress of mine, and I just end up loving her more and more with each and every performance she gives. Lately she’s just smashed it out the park, from her role as the shrewd Meredith Vickers in Prometheus, to the murderous queen in Snow White and the Huntsman and now as Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Theron is no stranger to action and holds such incredible stature in Hollywood already. Not to mention that she’s reaching that point where Hollywood could very quickly go sour on her (cough, Hollywood hates actresses over 40, cough, and Theron is currently 39) this is the perfect opportunity for Theron to stand up and become one of the most iconic Marvel characters out there and stay as that character for the expected future. This would be a huge victory for women in Hollywood in that respect.
Not to mention that you could look at Charlize and just know that she can kick your ass no matter how tough you may think you are and you’d thank her for it.
I’m so down for another Charlize Theron movie, and she’d absolutely nail it as Captain Marvel.
Katee Sackhoff has been a huge fan favourite for a long time, following her role as Lieutenant Kara Thrace in Battlestar Galactica.
I’ll openly admit that I don’t actually know much about Sackoff, but it really didn’t take long for me to figure out just why she’s such a favourite for the role of Carol Danvers.
Sackhoff has the stature to pull off such a role without a doubt, having been fighting off Cylons for a long time. Not to mention her role as Dahl alongside Vin Diesel in Riddick. She also starred in 24 as Dana Walsh. More recently, Sackhoff has been starring in crime drama Longmire, where she plays Victoria Moretti.
She’s been pegged as a favourite for a long time, including as far back as 2013 when Riddick came out. Both Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista had signed on for Marvel by then, so it was no surprise there that Sackhoff was getting scoped out at the same time.
The Canadian badass that’s made a huge name for herself in the History Channel show Vikings as the shieldmaiden Lagertha.
Katheryn herself as admitted that she’d love the chance to take on the role when fans brought her up, there’s already fanart out there of her in the role! Just like that nice little image above. Winnick’s a hard hitter who’s truly proven herself both as a dramatic actress and an action star alone in Vikings. I’m a huge fan of hers and I’d absolutely love to see her take on such a big role.
One of the aspects that would make Winnick an ideal candidate for Captain Marvel is that she’s already fight trained. Winnick’s a martial artist. She holds a third degree black belt Tae Kwon Do and second degree belt in Karate. The lady knows how to pack a punch! Or a kick for that matter. She’ll have the natural flow of a fighter that knows exactly what she’s doing, more so than just standard Hollywood stunt training, and whilst it may seem simple, that fluidity will help make things look even better on screen.
You may have seen Winnick in movies and TV shows before. She’s had roles in movies such as Love and Other Drugs, a reoccurring role on the TV show Bones a few years back and appeared alongside Ashton Kutcher in the movie Killers. Winnick’s been around a long time and she’d be more than capable to step up to the role.
I’d absolutely back a Captain Marvel played by Katheryn Winnick.
Australian actress Yvonne may be best known as her role as badass spy Sarah Walker in the TV show Chuck.
You may also know her for her role as Hannah McKay in Dexter, or if you still haven’t seen her, maybe you’d recognise her for her videogame counterpart as the voice and likeness for Miranda Lawson in Mass Effect 2 and 3. Last year she also starred as Kate Morgan in 24: Live Another Day.
Something pretty consistent in her career is that Strahovski knows how to kick serious ass. If you haven’t seen Chuck, I’d highly recommend it because it shows Strahovski for the brilliant actress she is. She can nail down the harder aspects, even in a comedy show, but at the same time she can still crack those jokes and follow it up with a swift kick or a punch against the bad guys. The whole run of the show’s on Netflix, go check it out!
I know she’s English, but just take a look around! Superman’s a Brit, so’s Daredevil and the last Spider-Man too. Nationality doesn’t apply when you’re a badass.
To me, Emily Blunt really proved that she’s just as much an action star as anyone is in the mixed reviewed movie The Edge of Tomorrow (or Live, Die, Repeat… Whichever). Whether you liked the movie or not, one thing for sure was that Blunt was an amazing part of the story. She fought, she mentored, she was easily the main character in all this with Tom Cruise just sort of being there as a means to an end.
Her roles in the past only back her up for being able to nail the comedy of a Marvel movie. You don’t need to look back so far to movies such as The Devil Wears Prada and Into the Woods to know she has a great sense of humour down. She’s also done the more dramatic roles such as playing Catherine Howard in the TV show Henry VIII alongside Ray Winstone.
Fun fact! Emily Blunt was Jon Favreau’s first choice for playing Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts she had to pull out of the project because of Gulliver’s Travels… I wonder how badly she regrets that one. But oh well! We all make mistakes, just like Will Smith did with the Matrix. If anything, getting Emily back into the Marvel-verse to play Carol would be perfect as she’s been considered before.
I’d absolutely watch Blunt as Captain Marvel. Damn, this just keeps getting harder and harder on who’d be the best…
Let’s face it, we’d let Nat play the entire damn MCU and be happy.
Natalie is often a fan favourite for a whole host of different projects and understandably so. She manages to nail down that look of being able to kill you with nothing more than her little finger and still look amazing with it.
Let’s look back over her career. Dormer has consistently played dramatic powerhouses such as Anne Boleyn in the TV series The Tudors alongside Jonathan Rhys Meyers, her current role as Margaery Tyrell in the series Game of Thrones is a clear cut example of her acting skills. Plus her more action based role as Cressida in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Part Two.
Dormer has actually already starred in a Marvel movie. If you look back to Captain America: The First Avenger, you may remember Private Lorraine who got to share a nice little smooch with Steve Rogers. I’d hardly see this as an issue for the future if Dormer ever did get the opportunity to play Danvers. Sharon Carter’s already in the mix, Peggy Carter’s relation. So if anything it could provide an amusing little moment of ‘You look familiar’ between Danvers and Rogers.
See the above on the whole being English thing, but wouldn’t Christie make an amazing wildcard Carol Danvers?
Christie’s performance as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones has shown Christie to be quite the spectacular actress and badass enough to take on and win against some of Westeros’ greatest fighters. If that alone isn’t enough in terms of credentials in playing a role like Captain Marvel I don’t know what is!
Her new castings in both Part Two of Mockingjay as Commander Lyme and as Captain Phasma in Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens just goes to show as well that Christie commands authority.
Normally I wouldn’t bring up appearance, but I actually want to talk about why Christie would be amazing simply because of it. She obviously nails the blond haired aspect, but I want to talk about her height. Christie is 6’3”, this makes her taller than Chris Evans. Personally, I think that alone would make her pretty spectacular. To have this tall, powerful woman alongside the tall, powerful men like Thor and Captain America.
Sword swinging Sheriff goodness comes in the form of Jennifer Morrison in her role as Emma Swan in TV show Once Upon a Time.
You may also remember her as Captain Kirk’s mother in the Star Trek reboot, where she and Chris Hemsworth were the proud parents. Nice. Other big roles include her role as Dr. Cameron in House and as Zoey Pierson in How I Met Your Mother.
Her role as Emma Swan is easily the best reason why you’d potentially put Morrison up front. Disney already have stakes in Once Upon a Time and they could easily use her to bring over audience from there to Marvel in bolstering views there. Not that I’d imagine that many who watch the show haven’t seen a Marvel movie, but you never know!
Anna Torv you may know best as Olivia Dunham in the TV series Fringe.
Her acting career is actually one that’s pretty light compared to the stars I’ve previously mentioned, but that doesn’t make her any less qualified for the job. I admittedly dropped out of Fringe, but from what I saw it was clear to me that Torv is another fantastic choice in playing a well balanced, dramatic role. Torv also voiced the role of Nariko in the well acclaimed Heavenly Sword, both for the game and the CG movie.
The only thing, and this is from my lack of knowledge, is that I haven’t seen her do comedy. That doesn’t mean she can’t do it of course, but humour is vital to being able to carry a Marvel character. It might be her chance to step up and shine.
Claire Danes has been around for a long, long time. Though recently in her role as Carrie Mathison in the TV show Homeland, she’s really rocketed to the top.
Danes has just about done it all in the film and television word. From Shakespeare, as Juliet in Romeo + Juliet, to getting down and dirty alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 3 as Kate Brewster.
She’s won countless awards and nominated for just as many, Danes may actually be too good for the role. Though that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth trying!
Danes could certainly bring gravity to the role and really pull off being Major Carol Danvers of the US Air Force and even more so if you followed the Security Chief background too.
Who should play Captain Marvel then?
Normally this would be the part where I decide that someone is a cut above the rest, who would be the best for the role… But I have no answer for you. Who should play Captain Marvel? I have no idea. We already have a pretty comprehensive list right here full of women who would do an incredible job as Carol Danvers, and there are still more actresses out there being suggested would be amazing in the role.
I don’t think it’s often where you can put forward such a huge list of actresses where all of them could do a pretty damn good job. I guess we just have to leave it in the hands of the casting directors and see what happens…
Who do you think should play Captain Marvel? Do you agree or disagree with anyone here on the list? Have you got a suggestion I haven’t mentioned? Send in a comment! We love to get chatting around this kind of thing!
