June NPD Report: Batman: Arkham Knight Keeps PS4 in the Lead

Though Batman: Arkham Knight’s release on PC was dismal, the console release of the game has done exceptionally well, unsurprisingly, becoming the best seller in June in the US according to the NPD Group’s latest report.

Unsurprisingly still is the fact that Sony is still in the lead with the PlayStation 4, helped along by the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, as it sold the most on Sony’s latest-gen console, though the Batman: Arkham Knight bundle likely helped too.

According to the report, sales of Rocksteady’s latest game helped drive a 19 per cent year-on-year surge in monthly software sales. Not only that, after just 12 days of being on sale, it became the second highest-selling release of 2015 behind Mortal Kombat X.

NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan revealed that sales of Arkham Knight exceeded sales of Arkham City “slightly” adding that, “if sales were included from hardware bundles, Arkham Knight is the best-selling game of 2015 so far.”

I bet Warner Bros. Interactive is pretty chuffed.

In the ongoing console war, the PlayStation 4 was the best selling cosole last month, and has now held the top spot for 16 months of its life to date. As for Microsoft, they said that sales of the Xbox One were up 51 per cent year on year, and that active Xbox Live users across both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 have grown by 22 per cent.

Nintendo is even doing pretty well for itself with combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U increasing by more than 20 per cent over June last year, which Nintendo attribute to the New Nintendo 3DS.

As for Software, things are looking up here too, as June was the forth month of year-on-year growth in the US in 2015 so far. For the first six months in total, the NPD Group found that software sales were up 3 per cent over the same period last year.

Bringing the news back to Warner Bros. Interactive, in the charts the company has a total of three games still in the charts, Batman: Arkham Knight, LEGO: Jurassic World, and Mortal Kombat X. Combine those with this year’s release of Dying Light, then Warner Bros. Interactive becomes the top publisher of 2015 so far, with a 217 per cent dollar sales increase over the same period in 2014. Blimey.

Here’s the full chart rundown:

  1. Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

All in all things are looking up for the industry as total spend was $869.4 million, up 18 per cent from June 2014. Software sales have increased 21 per cent to $345.5 million, and hardware is up by 8 per cent to $313.1 million.

Total sales of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have grown 14 per cent compared to June 2014 which are offsetting declines in older console sales, though according to the report this can be tied to the steadying of PS3 and Xbox 360 declines.

NPD also added that console bundles have made up a total of 82 per cent of console sales, up from 35 per cent in June 2014.
