Let’s face it, out of all of the games launching this year, we really didn’t think Rory McIlroy PGA Tour would score the number one spot in the UK gaming charts, but hey, stranger things have happened. Though it probably helps that it’s the only current-gen golf game.
After 18 years of having Tiger Woods on the title, EA Sports decided to go with someone a little more fresh faced. In comes Rory McIlroy, the world’s top golfer to grace the cover for this year’s current-gen debut. And what a debut it is, not only is it the first PGA Golf game on Xbox One and PS4, but it’s the first PGA Tour title to score a number one since Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, both of which had similar week-one sales.
Oddly, the game launched on Thursday, outside of both the US, EU, and UK release windows, though this is because it launched along side the start of The Open. The only other time this has happened in the series, as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 also launched on a Thursday, according to Chart-Track.
Elsewhere in the charts, the only other new release into the top 40 was Sony’s God of War III: Remastered, which landed in ninth place.
