In a fairly surprising turn of events, Sony Online Entertainment and Daybreak Games Studio founder has stepped down as the company’s CEO and President as he transitions into a new, to be determined, role at the company.
Replacing Smedly will be chief creative operating officer Russell Shanks, assuming Smedley’s duties and overseeing the daily operations of the studio along with a committee.
This decision to step down comes a little under two weeks after he publicly spoke out about the sentenced “Lizard Squad” member, threatening legal action against the “little dirtbag,” as well as his family. The reason for this is due to Smedley’s plane being forced to land in August last year due to a bomb threat which was apparently attributed to the “hacker group.”
“At this time, I can confirm that John Smedley will be taking some time off from the company for the near-term and transitioning to a different role to be determined,” a spokesperson for the company told Polygon. “Upon finalization of his plans, further communication will be provided.”
Unfortunately it seems all of the targeted attacks on Smedley’s personal and work life have become a little too much.
