Back in March, Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion teamed up with the idea to produce a parody of post-Firefly life, in the form of a TV series called Con Man. The story is loosely centred on Tudyk’s convention experiences after Firefly was cancelled. Tudyk’s on-screen character, Wray Nerely, is struggling with acting life after his show, Spectrum, was cancelled ten years ago, whereas his co-star, Jack Moore (Fillion), has rocketed to stardom. Despite the show’s cancellation, it is a cult classic, and still draws huge crowds of fans at conventions, but Wray Nerely remains frustrated at his perceived lack of success.
The series was crowdfunded beyond belief by some 46,000 fans, and raised more than $1million in just 24 hours, with an end result of over $3million. It became the highest funded web series in crowdfunding history so far (and I’m super excited to be a part of that!)
This weekend’s San Diego Comic Con saw the launch of the official Con-Man trailer, which features many guest spots from the nerd elite, including Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Summer Glau and Sean Maher from the original Firefly series. Seth Green, Amy Acker, Michael Dorn, Felicia Day, Sean Astin, Henry Rollins, Milo Ventimiglia and Wil Wheaton all make cameos; and Nolan North, Tricia Helfer, Michael Trucco, Emily Kinney, and Robert Patrick are among some of the other cast members. Even Joss Whedon makes an appearance, so be prepared to geek out massively at the collective awesomeness.
The series will be released on 30 September.
