Epic Games have contacted forum members to inform them that personal information has been compromised following a hacker attack on their forum. Epic Games sent out an email to inform people of the attack and that the forums have been taken offline for the moment to prevent further attacks.
“We apologize for the inconvenience this causes everyone,”
Thankfully though, Unreal Engine 4, Fortnite and the new Unreal Tournamnet forums have not been affected in this attack. Those hit by the attack included the UDK forum, Infinity Blade, Gears of War, Bulletstorm and past Unreal Tournament games forums. As Epic Games send out password reset requests to users once the forum is back online, users should take time to ensure that any site with the same or similar passwords are changed just to be safe.
“To further understand what’s happened and prevent it in the future, we’re working with a computer security firm to identify the nature of the compromise. We will report further information on the forums when they reopen.
It is possible that any information stored or sent by you using the forums may have been accessed. Since this is a public forum, we do not collect or maintain financial information, but we advise you to be alert for suspicious email such as phishing attempts.”
As always it sucks to be a victim of a hacker attack, but let’s hope Epic Games are on the case to get the forum fixed and back online. Until then, check your personal details if you were affected and do what you can to ensure no further damage.
