What is the Super family? Well, it’s a family who are super. Families that do not apply are The Flintstones, The Simpsons, The Griffins and The Waltons. The one that does apply is the group of or team that hang out with Superman.
Just like how Batman and his team of sidekicks hang out. Since the New 52 continuity reboot, who are the Super Family? Well, it’s Superman, Supergirl and Superboy. Superman, the last son of Krypton and defender of Earth. Supergirl, the cousin of Superman, the last daughter of Krypton trying to find her place in the world. Superboy, sort of a clone of Superman who was built as a living weapon and some complicated comic book plot devices.
So what’s the current state of this loose confederation of S-symbol wearers? Kind of defunct. The first blow came when Superboy’s title was cancelled and rounded off Superboy kind of seemingly getting over his teen angst and becoming more zen.
Of course, that theory is supported by Superboy appearing in the Supergirl series, near the end of it, of course. Since, the Supergirl series has been cancelled. So, I guess no more Supergirl for a while? She has no real link to any other character except Superman, and since he’s busy with his own re-launch stuff, we may not see her for a while.
Superboy almost seems to have reverted back to the angsty hero of yore. Since he’s back with the Teen Titans as they try to figure out if he slaughtered a bunch of people.
So yeah, the cool little support squad, seems to be gone, isolating Superman on a lonely pedestal towering above his peers. Was it the writing of these two heroes that killed them off? Probably desperate new direction after new direction. No sense of purpose and a slave to the sales number. Both characters, of course, had potential like every character ever has potential.
So, there goes that fun little loose team of heroes who could help shoulder the Superman burden, down the drain.
Well, at least he has Krypto, the Super Saiyan dog with an electric bite.
