Recently a new image was released depicting actor Michael Fassbender in full Assassin’s garb. Now some more juicy details have surfaced, with the movie being given a December 21st 2016 release date. Astute fans of Assassin’s Creed will know this as the day series protagonist Desmond Miles sacrificed himself to save Earth.
Fassbender will portray series newcomer Callum Lynch in the modern day. True to Assassin’s Creed, Lynch will use the Animus machine to re-live the memories of his Spanish ancestor Aguilar, also played by Fassbender. The Animus will take us back to 15th Century Spain, with modern day Templars Abstergo Industries sure to have a major role. Assassin’s and Templars will wage war in the present day, with the Spanish Inquisition serving as centre stage for the centuries old conflict.
Although the movie will feature new characters and new settings, Ubisoft’s head of Assassin’s Creed content Aymar Azaïzia urged that the movie will share the same universe as the games.
You will find lots of elements from our franchise! Modern day is a key element in the franchise, and it is a key element in the movie. Elements in the film have consequences as in our games, comics, and books.
He also went on to stress that Callum Lynch will be “very different” from Desmond, Daniel Cross and Clay.
In addition to Fassbender, Michael Kenneth Williams has been cast, with his role still unconfirmed. You may remember Williams from critically acclaimed shows such as Boardwalk Empire and The Wire. Gamers will also recognise him as the face and voice of Kimble “Irish” Graves in first person shooter Battlefield 4. Other confirmed cast include Ariane Labed (Before Midnight) and Marion Cotillard (Inception).
So, although we won’t be re-visiting any locations or story-lines familiar to the games series, “it’s possible you may find familiar faces.”
