Looks like Star Wars is starting to go dark, which is sort of a shock when you think about who owns the rights to Star Wars, which is Disney now.
So at the D23 Expo – a convention full of huge Disney reveals. The first of which I’ll assume will be many reveals for Marvel, Star Wars and other Disney properties. So check out the first principal photography image of the cast who’ll be leading the daring mission to steal the plans for the Death Star which leads onto Star Wars: A New Hope.
So, who’s in the photo? Well it’s time for a roll call, methinks. We have Forest Whittaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen and Riz Ahmed. Looks like our earlier suspicions were correct! I’m sure a name or too will strike a chord with someone, especially if you’ve seen Ip Man, Amazing Spider-man 2 or Firefly. If you’re a film geek you’ll know all about composition and shot angles and all those small things most of us doesn’t notice. No Mara Jade though…
Fun trivia which is to be had? Well The Raid director, Gareth Edwards is directing, with a plan to bring a realistic and darker tone to the franchise. Here’s some hype from producer Kathleen Kennedy:
“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” says Kathleen Kennedy.
“It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.
Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”
