The latest NPD report is here and as you’d expect as we slowly move out of the summer drought things are set to change. Though this month, things are relatively the same, including the PlayStation 4 sitting on top in terms of best selling consoles in the states.
Unsurprisingly the NPD Group’s report for August revealed that spending in the United States, is actually down by two per cent, pinned mostly on lower software sales, though it comes as no surprise. Hardware sales were too on the decline, as well as software sales, though again, no surprise considering this month’s big releases were Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Until Dawn, and Rare Replay.
Of course, in terms of console sales, the PlayStation 4 is still on top, but Microsoft is still doing well. In a statement, the company wrote “Xbox One continued to gain momentum in August, with sales in the U.S. up 26 percent over August 2014.”
As for Software, it seems the usual culprit, sales of last-gen titles, are really pulling the overall spend down as once again Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles are selling less and less as time goes on.
“New physical software sales for [Xbox One and PS4] consoles, up 34 percent, did not offset the 51 percent decline in [last] generation console sales as well as the 24 percent drop in portable software sales,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement. “This led to the 10 percent decline in August 2015 sales versus August 2014.”
Software has done pretty bad this month, but due to only one real new game launching, and that’s Until Dawn, it comes as no surprise. Madden NFL 16 is also another new release this month and sits on top of the chart. Below that, Minecraft – a game that’s managed to outsell all three other new titles for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Of all of the game’s in the top charts, Other than Minecraft and LEGO Jurassic World, all of the games besides the Xbox One exclusives, which sell on both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 sold better on Sony’s console. Though that seems obvious considering the spread of users on PlayStation 4 to those on Xbox One.
Here are the charts for August.
