Hold on to your PS Vita’s guys and girls as it looks unlikely that Sony will be following up with their not-so-popular handheld due to smartphones creating an unhealthy climate in which to launch a new device.
During a Q&A session at EGX 2015, Shuhei Yoshida, was asked about a new Sony handheld, and it seems like it won’t be happening any time soon, if at all.
People have mobile phones and it’s so easy to play games on smartphones, and many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.
I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Touch-based games are fun – there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.
So I hope, like many of you, that this culture of playing portable games continues but the climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming.
It’s a shame really, because the Vita has so much potential, but due to lack of first party support from Sony, it’s only really indie and other third party developers keeping the console alive, and when that stops, it’s all over for what is a pretty great handheld console.
