I’m a big fan of Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors series, particularly the more recent iterations of its iconic “musou” gameplay. Done well and with enough varied content, the Musou framework can lend itself to some great licensed games, as shown by Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage, Hyrule Warriors and One Piece: Pirate Warriors.
In October the West will see another franchise get the Omega Force treatment – the venerable Dragon Quest series, with Dragon Quest Heroes.
With the game’s release looming, Square Enix have released a new trailer for the game, introducing some of the new and old characters you’ll be playing as, including DQIV’s Alena and Maya as well as new characters Luceus, Aurora and Isla.
The trailer also shows off a few of the RPG mechanics that have made the transition to Musou gameplay, including giving players the ability to summon creatures during battle using “Monster Medals”, creating a party of up to four characters, upgrading your heroes’ equipment and more.
Overall, Dragon Quest Heroes looks to be a fun departure from the series’ classic turn-based gameplay, whilst bringing a bunch of its RPG elements along for the ride.
The game seems to have done a really nice job converting Akira Toriyama’s iconic character and enemy designs into 3D too, so now we’ll just need to see whether we have another Hyrule Warriors on our hands when Dragon Quest Heroes releases on PS4 and PS3 on October 16th.
