Developers Hi-Rez Studios have announced that their god-battling third-person MOBA SMITE is now available on Steam in addition to its preexisting proprietary service, a move motivated by their desire to make the game more accessible to a wider array of PC gamers.
Todd Harris, co-founder Chief Operating Officer of Hi-Rez said of the Steam release:
The time is right for SMITE on Steam… the platform has evolved to include more quality free-to-play titles and, most importantly, better ways for users to discover them. Now is the best time yet to see what SMITE is all about, and we’re excited to make it even easier for the more than 125 million active users worldwide who call Steam home to dive in for free.
SMITE has already enjoyed a nearly 10 million strong playerbase on its own service, which the Steam integration will surely increase further – especially considering that players on both services will be able to play with one another seamlessly.
The game is free on the Steam store, with a free-to-play model similar to League of Legends, where free players can only choose from a certain selection of Gods from the full roster of 69, with the available Gods changing on a timed rotation. Players who’d like to buy all the Gods at once can do so by purchasing the Ultimate God Pack, which is currently on sale at £13.99 to celebrate the game’s release on Steam.
