Sphero is probably well known for its range of remote controlled balls which you can zip around your house using nothing more than your smartphone. Although cute, they are the definition of “pointless gadget”, it does a few stunts, you can use it to torment your cats, but it has no real use. It’s just fun!
The latest announcement from Sphero on the other hand, now that’s something to pay attention to. Remember that adorable ball-like droid from the new Star Wars flick? Of course you do! Well, Sphero has made a remote controlled version of the BB-8, and it can be yours for $150.
It can zip around your house, has adorable droid noises, and can autonomously patrol your home looking for any trouble and alert you if something seems odd.
“Meet BB-8 — the app-enabled Droid that’s as authentic as it is advanced,” the official statement says. “BB-8 has something unlike any other robot — an adaptive personality that changes as you play. Based on your interactions, BB-8 will show a range of expressions and even perk up when you give voice commands. Set it to patrol and watch your Droid explore autonomously, make up your own adventure and guide BB-8 yourself, or create and view holographic recordings.”
The toy is set to launch this Friday and seem like a bit of a steep price for what is essentially a remote controlled ball with half a ball slapped on the top. But it’s much more than that.
The device itself is pretty smart in that the “head” of the little bot, which is attached using a series of magnets and wheels, never rolls over, it’ll always remain on top of the base it’s stuck to, which I think is awesome in itself. There’s also a number of mobile focused features allowing you to send videos across to your friends, though that seems to be strictly left to the phone side of things, sadly the droid doesn’t seem to have a working camera on board.
Anyway, check out the trailer above for a chance to see the adorable thing in action.
