There’s a good reason for Activision keeping Call of Duty on last gen despite having removed the campaign entirely: there are still 12 million people who play Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. That’s right, a game which launched three years ago is still pretty darn popular.
How popular exactly?
Well in the last quarter alone, that’s July, August, and September, the game had 12 million monthly active users. Now, this could be many revisiting the game in preparation for the new title, but looking at the numbers elsewhere, it’s obvious that it’s still a pretty popular game.
On Steam, the game is currently being played more than last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and in terms of the Xbox One backwards compatibility request list, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is among the top most requested games for the upcoming feature.
It seems Activision also shares my thoughts on the game’s ongoing popularity with chief Eric Hirshberg saying that it was fuelled by anticipation of Black Ops 3. That being said, just a few weeks ago I played Black Ops 2 just for fun, not to revisit the series, and it still holds up, even for a game on last-gen.
