In news that I’d imagine will prove either hilarious or infuriating depending on who hears it, UK retailer GAME have announced that they will be putting a uniquely 21st-century spin on the Santa meet-and-greet, offering customers the ability to take a selfie with their Christmas mascot Gamer Claus (those who’ve watched any sort of on-demand service in the UK recently might be especially familiar with him) thanks to a number of special Augmented Reality enabled floor markers within participating GAME stores.
Users need only open (or install) the official GAME app, head to the Scan It! feature and scan one of those markers to get your photo with Gamer Claus going – with the option of posting straight to social media thanks to a new feature within the app itself.
Fred Prego, Marketing and Insight Director at GAME, had this to say on the move:
For too long, there has been only one option for the traditional festive picture: on Father Christmas’ knee. Just like the world of gaming, we want to bring this into the next generation, giving our community the chance to take an augmented reality selfie with our Christmas icon, Gamer Claus. At GAME, we are always looking for ways to innovate across all our channels to build and serve the gaming community. This new development will make shopping with us a truly interactive, only at GAME, experience this Christmas.
Whether one should interpret this as just a funny marketing scheme from GAME or a rather intriguing sign of the times is up for debate. Either way, it’s an interesting method of getting your customers engaged with a mascot and it’s good to see companies making more use of Augmented Reality technology. Christmas selfies all round!
