Following the incredible success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which became the best selling game in 2015 in the states, Activision has revealed that the franchise overall has sold 250 million units. Now that’s a lot of games.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 becoming the best selling game of 2015 in the states as well as securing the Christmas number one in the UK, Activision has revealed that since the release of Call of Duty in 2003, the game has sold 250 million units.
“This also marks the seventh year in a row that Call of Duty has been the #1 selling franchise in North America, according to NPD,” said Call of Duty franchise general manager Rob Kostich. “In fact, Call of Duty has surpassed 250 million units sold life-to-date worldwide. This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, and would not be possible without the incredible passion from the Call of Duty community.”
Call of Duty began mostly as a shooter set in World War II, it wasn’t until Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which launched in 2007, did the franchise begin to take a more modern approach. The franchise has since generated 12 titles, spanning from the World War II era, to a focus on Black Ops, to a more Modern Warfare setting, to a more futuristic Advanced Warfare.
Following Activision enlisting a three-year cycle to the Call of Duty series with developers Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and newcomers Sledgehammer Games taking turns to release games, Infinity Ward is next in line currently hard at work developing a game which is set to launch later this year.
What are we expecting? Well either a follow-on from Call of Duty: Ghosts, something new, or Modern Warfare 4 – though the latter seems unlikely.
