We already knew that Netflix were putting things into place to crack down on its users using VPNs and proxies to access content available to users in other regions, what we didn’t expect was it to happen this soon…
We’ve heard from one of our past writers based here in the UK that Netflix has started to warn him when he’s using a proxy to access content not available in the UK. Nothing too serious happens right now, but when viewing content available in other regions he’s served with an error message which reads:
“You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help visit netflix.com/proxy”
This has happened on both the desktop and iPad version of Netflix, however the Xbox or TV apps aren’t giving this notification. Interestingly, if you close the notification and refresh the content you were originally trying to watch, this does allow you to do so. Though if you start something new, you’ll likely receive the notification again.
Whether or not Netflix plans to do anything more than notify users to switch off proxies remains to be seen. Though it wouldn’t surprise me if they start revoking accounts doing such a thing.
