It looks like we’re set to see the return of The Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko’s Modern Life on the big screen once again as Nepoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess is working on a flick which will feature classic Nickelodeon characters.
Details are pretty thin at the moment, but in a statement to Polygon, a representative of Paramount Pictures confirmed the news. Hess will be working with his frequent collaborator Jerusha Hess, who will co-write the project, which is currently in development.
NickToons as it’ll be called, hopes to be a modern-day Nickelodeon take on Who Framed Roger Rabbit? blending live-action with cartoons. Set to feature in the film are characters from Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, and Rocko’s Modern Life, among others.
“The project comes at a time when there is renewed interest in Nickelodeon’s library of characters from the last 25 years,” said the Paramount representative.
This is just the first of many attempts by Nickelodeon to bring back their famed 90s characters, with Hey Arnold! getting a new cartoon, as well as the relaunch of a number of classic toons on its own dedicated channel.
