tinyBuild launched their retro-style boxing sim / management game Punch Club in a very unique way. Rather than sending out the usual humorous press release and slapping the game on Steam, they decided to take a gamble. What if the Twitch community launched the game by completing it first?
It was certainly a gamble, but thanks to the success of games like Twitch Plays Pokémon, Twitch Plays Punch Club quickly got viewers embarking on a punched-up, drug-fuelled journey to success as the game was completed in just a few days, launching on Steam that afternoon.
The game launched ten days ago now, and already Punch Club has grossed over $1 million in sales, with more than 100,000 sales across both Steam and iOS. So did Twitch Plays Punch Club work? Damn right it did. I’m sure many who played the game on Twitch picked up the game soon after in order to go on their own path.
Punch Club is due to launch on Android on January 28 with the iOS version receiving an update to match the Steam version. There’s also a new update for the Steam version in the works which is set to expand on the game’s storyline.
Our review of Punch Club is currently in progress, having hands on with both the PC and iOS versions though, I can say for sure that this game is brilliant.
