LG has announced its first “modular” smartphone at Mobile World Congress this week, the oft rumoured LG G5.
The LG G5 features an all-metal body but its Module Type design allows you to swap out the bottom to put in different accessories, or ‘LG Friends’ as the company is calling it. These accessories include a camera module, the LG CAM Plus, and a Hi-Fi player, the LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY.
The CAM Plus provides buttons for the power, zoom, shutter, record and LED indicator and will give the phone a more camera-like physical feel, it also gives an extra battery capacity of 1,200 mAh. The Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY will give higher audio quality when playing sounds so you’ll hear better audio when listening to music, for example, all of which is powered by B&O PLAY, something the company announced earlier last week.
The battery on the LG G5 is 2,800 mAh and it’s removable; when you want to put in one of the LG Friends, you take the battery out and place it in a different base and put it back into the phone. Interestingly, LG made no comment as to whether the device will remain on as you swap these modules, or whether you’ll be fully powering down to switch each of these modules out.
The phone also has a 5.3 inch screen, a slight reduction on the 5.5 inch on the previous generation although there is still the quad HD resolution. It features the latest Qualcomm 820 processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
The device features two cameras on the back. One of them is 16MP and has a 78° lens and the other is 8MP and has a wide angle 135° lens. LG claims the latter is 1.7 times wider than other cameras on the market and 15° wider than the field of view from a person’s eye. The front facing camera is also 8MP.
There were several other interesting accessories that were announced with the G5 including the LG 360 VR and the LG 360 CAM. The 360 VR is a pair of virtual reality goggles that plug in via a cable to the phone and LG claims its 118g weight is one third lighter than similar products. The 360 CAM is a portable camera, which features two 200° 13MP lenses and has 4GB internal storage. It connects to the G5 to show 360° pictures and also supports 2k video.
The G5 will be available in gold, silver, titan and pink although there’s no word on release date or pricing information.
