Despite negative reviews [you can check out n3’s official review here], Batman v Superman is continuing to break records and rake in the cash, pushing past the $500 million dollar mark today, after being out for roughly a week.
Needless to say, there is no real need for concern on how this would affect the DCEU film slate, and work is full-steam ahead on those films. But beyond the films that have already been announced, it has now been confirmed that BvS star Ben Affleck has already written a script for a solo Batman film!
The newly-released blockbuster superhero film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was made with a very specific goal in mind: to build the foundation for a brand new cinematic universe inhabited by the characters of the DC Universe. Something that would expand the ever-growing niche in the box office for superhero films and shared universe kickstarted back in 2008 by Marvel Studios [sure, Marvel Studios may not have made the first ever superhero film, or the first film to introduce the idea of a shared cinematic universe, but they sure kickstarted Hollywood’s love for it]. Unfortunately, some complain this took away from the movie itself being good, which has led to very divisive opinions on the film’s quality – but regardless, it still met that primary goal. It has laid the foundation for the future of the DC Extended Universe.
With a rather large slate of films set to be released over the next few years, ranging from more popular franchises, such as Wonder Woman & The Flash, to more obscure ones, such as Suicide Squad and Aquaman, it would be true to say that Warner Bros. Pictures and DC have a very full plate right now. However, this is not stopping any of those involved from looking to the franchise’s future beyond the end of it’s first slate of films. One such example of this is actor Ben Affleck, who played Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will return as the character for a cameo in this year’s Suicide Squad, before returning as a main character in Justice League Part One & Justice League Part Two.
The actor/director has been rumoured to be starring and directing a solo Batman film since before BvS was released, and now the co-CEOs of talent agency William Morris Endeavor [Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell] have confirmed [whilst speaking to THR] that Affleck has indeed already penned a script for a solo Batman film, citing that it is now “out there as an option”. While no there is no current information that enlightens us on whether or not the script is close to being greenlit, or whether or not Affleck will indeed serve as director, the BvS star recently said he was working on something exciting with DC CEO Geoff Johns, but said he was unable to share details at this present point in time. It isn’t too much of a stretch to believe that this would be in reference to a solo film, which is rumoured to adapt the Under the Hood story-arc from the comics [for those less comic-savvy readers out there, you can check out the excellent animated Under The Red Hood adaptation of the arc].
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is currently screening in cinemas worldwide.
