Captain America: Civil War is definitely a VERY highly anticipated film this year. The third instalment in the Captain America franchise will show fan-favourites going head-to-head in what can be summed as “Team Iron Man vs Team Captain America” – basically, it’s a superhero showdown of epic proportions. And now, fans have been treated to the second official – and we’ve got the best moments picked out for you!
Five – Rhodey Down
One of the many characters set to take part in the events of the Civil War is one who’s been around since the very beginning – James “Rhodey” Rhodes, US Marine, War Machine, and, most of all, Tony Stark/Iron Man’s best friend since forever. And, to be quite frank, things aren’t looking too good for the newly christened Avenger.
While we’ve seen shots of this in previous trailers of Rhodey’s unfortunate hit, it still manages to make the Top 5 list as it brings about an interesting question of what exactly Rhodey’s fate is. It’d be quite unusual for a major blockbuster to reveal a major character death in the trailer, but only time will tell.
Four – Lovers’ Quarrel
In the comics, Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch & Victor Shade/The Vision become lovers (and, at one point, parents – though that led to a whole bunch of reality-altering drama). In Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Vision is shown saving Scarlet Witch, which some fans took as a nod to the couple’s eventual relationship. But, even if that relationship one day comes to fruition within the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe], there are some SERIOUS hurdles they’ll need to overcome…
Judging by the cracks in the floor at his feet, it looks like Wanda might be taking control of Vision’s density controlling abilities. It is also worth noting that fellow [former] Avenger Clint Barton/Hawkeye is laying at her feet [after comparing it to other shots in the trailer, I can confirm that those are his boots, and at the last second in this shot, he turns his head and you can make out that it is, in fact, Barton].
Three – Welcome to… The Raft!
Within the Marvel Universe, it is a highly impractical solution to try putting super-powered criminals and villains into your average prison. As such, the city of New York has it’s very own super-prison – The Raft! It now appears the MCU is set to get it’s own copy of said prison, though this looks to be a bit more isolated. The Raft is also always above water in the comics, whereas here it is submerged and is able to come above surface. Perhaps the Russo’s have added in the underwater aspect as a nod to the Avenger’s Hydro-Base from the comics, though that simply may be reading too far into it. Perhaps the creation of The Raft in the MCU will allow for future villains to escape the fate of being killed like many of the villains who have already come so far.
Two – Ant-Man Takes A Little Trip
This one is something fans have been very vocal about wanting to see for sometime now. In a classic Avengers comic (Avengers #233 to be exact), Hawkeye shoots an arrow with Ant-Man hitching a ride on it. It’s an awesome moment, and it’s been carried right on over to the comics, where the two team up to take on Iron Man!
One – J Jonah Jameson – We’ve Got Pictures of Spider-Man (and Black Panther, too)!
You know, it’s funny – Civil War, despite all the other Marvel characters playing a part in the film, is a Captain America film. And yet, two of the most talked about things have been the introduction of Spider-Man and Black Panther into the MCU. Whilst we’ve had looks at Black Panther before, it’s always nice to get some new looks at the Wakandan hero (and it’s nice to see they aren’t downplaying the fact that his suit has Vibranium, a metal that absorbs ALL vibrations/the strongest metal in the MCU/the same material Cap’s shield is made out of – that thing seems to be 100% bulletproof).
But the MOST exciting part of the trailer for many is hands down the reveal of Spider-Man! Tom Holland will be making his debut as Marvel’s most popular character this year, before getting his own solo film next year, and this first-look at his costume has bolstered my excitement to see him in this ever-expansive universe ten-fold (and my excitement was already pretty high up)!
Hie eyes are emotive, meaning they move just like his eyes do, which will allow him to demonstrate emotion despite the mask [I have seen a number of people online complaining about HOW this would be possible within the world of the MCU – all it takes is a close look at his eyes to realise there are lenses there, and if you listen, you can actually HEAR the mechanical sound of shutters when they move]. The suit looks absolutely amazing, with it being a faithful yet modern take on Spidey’s more classic comic book costumes. Hell, it even has the classic back spider emblem on the back!
