From Wednesday, May 18, Microsoft is set to purge and release “nearly one million” gamertags for certain users to use, so if you’ve been sitting with the gamertag BuTTDocTOr101, you can now grab yourself BuTTDocTOr.
There are a number of special conditions in order to grab one of these released Gamertags; users will need to have an active Xbox Live Gold membership and at least one year of cumulative Xbox Live Gold tenure.
The Gamertags will be released over a 24-hour period giving fans in various countries equal opportunities to grab the Gamertag they want. Microsoft has also revealed a few of the categories in which the names relate to, from “Proper Names” to pop culture references, food, geography and travel, and much more.
They also say that if the tag you want isn’t yet available, to keep trying as many names will be released over the 24-hours since release.
Access to the new Gamertags will be available on Xbox.com, the most convenient way to make a Gamertag change. Xbox Live Gold members can also use the Xbox App on Windows 10 to change their name as well as the Xbox One console. Xbox 360 owners on the other hand will need to access the Xbox.com website as they won’t be available through the Xbox 360 console.
Changing your Gamertag won’t impact your Gamerscore, Achievements, or your Friends list.
