The Touhou Project franchise, originally created by a single developer known as ZUN and following the misadventures of a massive cast of characters in the mystical world of Gensokyo, is almost unquestionably a super-adorable juggernaut of both the danmaku and anime communities – there’s every possibility you may have run into a popular bit of fan content for the series (e.g. Bad Apple or Marisa Stole The Precious Thing) long before you discover that the series started life as a long-running series of independently produced bullet hell games.
The series has rarely seen an official game released on a platform other than PC, however an exception to this particular trend is on its way in Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet, a PS4 3D “Shoot ’em Up Fighter” game featuring a number of characters from the series that is coming to the West courtesy of NIS America, who have released a number of new screenshots showing off the sure-to-be eye-wateringly bright fights that players will be able to engage in.
As you can see from the screenshots, it looks like the fights you’ll be taking on will be some suitably “Touhou” fare – with both combatants throwing huge and brilliantly coloured spells at one another, each trying to dodge and deflect the other’s attacks as they do so. Whilst we’ll have to actually play the game to see how fun those fights are to enact, like the boss fights in the series’ traditional danmaku games, it’s sure to be quite the spectacle whatever the case.
More information on the game can be found on NIS America’s official site.
Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet will be released on the 6th of September in the US and the 9th of September in Europe.
