So when the earth gets destroyed and your find yourself needing some water to ensure your steam power engine doesn’t run out, you have two options: Work hard and earn some water like any normal citizen in this new space era, or because a leader of a group of CowBots, fight for survival however you see fit. If that sounds like your jam then welcome to the world of SteamWorld Heist the latest instalment in the SteamWorld universe now available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita.
Released back on the Nintendo 3DS last year, SteamWorld Heist developed by Image and Form International was met with high praise even from our very own editor Aaron who reviewed that version of the game back in December. Now however we are looking at the new and improved version of SteamWorld Heist which is also a lot shinier as well. So let’s dive right in and explore the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of SteamWorld Heist.
At it’s core Steamworld Heist is a turn based strategy game where you aim in real time to pull off some sick shots and complete your mission. Taking control of CowBot Capt. Piper Faraday, a smuggler and part-time pirate, you lead your crew on an epic journey. With a number of different characters and factions along the way you’ll soon find what it means to be a part of the crew and what you’re really fighting for. You’ll move through the galaxy from mission to mission slowly working towards your overall goal. The great thing about SteamWorld Heist is that you can tackle these missions in a way that best suits you thanks to the number of options available to you and your crew both in and out of missions.
Before a mission you’ll be able to hire new crew members, purchase items and weapons and plan your crew to best optimise your tactics for the next mission. During a mission you take the number of allowed crew members with you and then go cover to cover as you run and gun down the enemy, lining up a sick trick shot to bounce off a wall to a barrel and cause an explosion or maybe to take off a few hats at once. Yes I said hats. That’s a key part of SteamWorld Heist so make sure you invest a lot of time into giving your crew the most suitable hats. My obsession for hats to one side, the gameplay options are rich and varied and it results in SteamWorld Heist being fresh and replayable for many, many hours.
On the controls side of things Steamworld Heist handles smoothly and beautifully on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. From the menu to the battle each action feels great to control and never once did I find myself struggling with any given situation because of the controls. SteamWorld Heist has moved perfectly from the Nintendo 3DS over to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita and it’s a joy to play SteamWorld Heist on either of these systems.
What really matters here however with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions of SteamWorld Heist is the new and improved HD visuals. You’ll find that every element of SteamWorld Heist has been given an overhaul and now looks better then ever. From background to animations, particle effects and audio alike. Everything has just been stepped up to bring a new level of detail and life to the world of SteamWorld Heist and all, for your enjoyment. On these improvements alone the wait for the release is worth it just to witness the gorgeous creative work on display here.
Speaking of displays you might think that the screen size on the PlayStation Vita might cause an issue with SteamWorld Heist but honestly it was the perfect fit. Though it did feel like the camera could have been a little wider allowing more of the world to be displayed at once. It wasn’t something that took away from my enjoyment of the game thanks to the camera controls being so smooth and because I was too busy being addicted to the gameplay. Jump over to the big screen, or whatever you have your PlayStation 4 connected to and your find that SteamWorld Heist holds up well on even the largest of displays. It’s clear, clean and stunning visuals will continue to impress as you push further through the game’s story.
You should also note that both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita versions of the game ran perfectly during my time playing the game. Load times were short and never did I see any issues with the frame rate or any other elements on screen. Pop in, glitches, bugs or even just visual errors didn’t exist in SteamWorld Heist and that is great because the game is just so smooth that it’s awesome to see that the game as a whole has a solid level of polish.
The attention to detail in SteamWorld Heist is also one of the most lovably elements of it. Characters hats flying off from shots, the catchy and suitably themed cowboy music and my favourite, the characters themselves. Everything just fits together to create a game that continuously impresses and amazes you more and more during your time with it. In fact, the more time you spend with Steamworld Heist the better is becomes. It’s a solid game that just has so much to give to you if you’re willing to jump in and give it a chance.
In all if you’re looking for a game that will be a fantastic addition to your collection both on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita then look no further than Steamworld Heist. It honestly is as simple as that because Steamworld Heist on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita is a fantastic game that is as brilliant as it is addictive and I can’t put it down. Treat yourself and make sure to pick it up for sure.
