As of July 1, PlanetSide is dead. The servers for the MMO FPS have been switched off, and meteors rained down from the sky as the world of PlanetSide came to an apocalyptic end.
If however you missed it, the final moments of the big shutdown event were captured and will forever be encapsulated in a three-minute video on YouTube.
Daybreak, the studio behind PlanetSide (formerly Sony Online Entertainment), warned users that it would be closing PlanetSide along with Legends of Norrath, and July 1 was the date it would all come crashing down.
“PlanetSide 1 has a very important history with Daybreak Games and a special place in the hearts of those who work on its successor,” said the studio. “While we have run the game for free since 2014, due to evolving business needs and technical requirements it has become necessary to conclude this service.”
It’s not over for PlanetSide however, as its sequel, PlanetSide 2, also free-to-play, is alive and kicking on PC and PlayStation 4.
The original game launched on PC in 2003 and was one of the first shooters that offered huge-scale battles between thousands of other players. This same philosophy has also been taken over to PlanetSide 2, where at one point, over 1,100 players took part in an absolutely epic battle.
So as an ode to PlanetSide, you can watch the final moments in the video below:
