In the upcoming Iron Man series, we’ve learned that Tony Stark would be stepping down as Iron Man handing the reigns to a new hero, Riri Williams, a young science prodigy who created her own Iron man suit. But there was one big question, will Williams still hold the Iron Man mantle, despite not actually being a man?
Well, all has now been revealed as Marvel has announced that when Williams officially steps into the role later this year, she’ll be known as Ironheart.
Coming this November, the new Invincible Iron Man series will be created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Stefano Caselli, who’ll tell the story of Williams as she transitions into the new role.
Interestingly, the writers had a difficult time settling on a name, with titles like Iron Woman, Iron Maiden, and more bouncing around. Eventually they settled on Ironheart as it better suits Williams’ character.
“Iron Woman seemed old fashioned to some,” he says. “Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare. And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole. Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you’ll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe’s suggestion was.”
Williams already has a rich history as a character. She enrolled at MIT at age 15 and reverse-engineered a suit of power armour in her dorm. As for the suit itself, rather than having the same Iron Man AI, Williams’ suit will have an AI based on Stark’s personality meaning that, while he won’t necessarily be a part of the story, he’ll be there in spirit.
