During Apple’s Keynote earlier this evening, the company unveiled something new. To make sure people had plenty of options now they’re going to have to deal without having a headphone jack, Apple hopes their new fully wireless AirPods will do the job.
The new AirPods look like someone has taken scissors to a pair of EarPods and the wearer hasn’t noticed yet. The two, fully wireless, headphones will allow users to enjoy music, watch TV, make phone calls on the go, and interact with Siri without needing to fuss with wires.
The two AirPods will come in their own little carry case which also acts as a charging station for the two earphones. What’s more, simply flipping open the lid near your iPhone will instantly pair the AirPods with your iPhone and Apple Watch. In addition, accessing Siri is as simple as just double tapping on the earphone.
All of this is made possible thanks to the AirPod’s new Apple W1 chip “which enables AirPods to deliver high-quality audio and industry-leading battery life in a completely wireless design,” says Apple. The chip offers dual optical sensors and accelerometers in each AirPod that work with the W1 chip allowing them to detect whether they’re in your ears so they don’t continue or start playing music when you’re not listening.
As for battery power, the new AirPods will offer 5 hours listening time on one charge. That may not seem like a lot, and it really isn’t, but Apple has hopefully made the pain of charging them a little easer as the carry case also offers a battery that’s set to offer more than 24-hours listening time.
The AirPods unfortunately won’t be shipping with the iPhone 7 or 7 plus, but can be purchased separately this October for $159.
