The Coalition has announced this week that Gears of War 4 has gone gold, and to celebrate they’ve released the game’s launch trailer. In addition, a few other golden nuggets of information have surfaced, so we’re going to take a look back at what we know so far about the game.
When does Gears of War 4 Launch?
Gears of War 4 launches on October 11, 2016 for Xbox One and Windows 10 and will be included in Microsoft’s new Play Anywhere program allowing Xbox One players to play the game on Windows 10 for free, and vice-versa.
Gears of War 4 will also launch along side a Season Pass that’ll cover future DLC releases for the game. It’ll cover 24 multiplayer maps as well as content packs featuring new weapons, skins and abilities.
What is Gears of War 4 About?
Gears of War 4 will focus on three key characters in the game, including Marcus Fenix’s son, JD. It’s also been confirmed that an older version of Marcus will appear in the game. The game will be set 25 years after the events in Gears of War 3, exploring a different version of Sera which in itself includes new enemies and locations.
After the events of Gears 3, the use of Fossil Fuels was completely knocked out causing humanity to look at new ways to generate energy and survive. The previous events also caused a new environmental hazard called “Windflares” which sweep across the planet. Humans now live within walled cities to protect themselves from the dangers outside, and with Martial Law declared, exiting the city gates is explicitly prohibited.
As you’d expect, not everyone is happy about the Coalition of Ordered Government’s rules and have decided to form a group called the Outsiders which live outside of COG rules and cause havoc by raiding COG territory to gather resources.
Some human survivors rejected the viewpoints of the COG and formed a group called the “Outsiders” that live outside of the COG jurisdiction, conducting raids on COG territory to gather resources.
What Can We Expect from Gameplay?
Gears of War has always been known for its third-person shooter gameplay and Gears of War 4 is no different. The Coalition recently revealed that co-op play will be returning and will also be available on the PC version of the game.
In addition, the game can be played cross-play online between Windows 10 and Xbox One for campaign co-op, Horde mode, Multiplayer versus against AI, and multiplayer versus mode in private and LAN games. Cross-platform competitive multiplayer matchmaking won’t be coming, however.
In terms of gameplay elements, aside from the third-person gameplay, the cover-based shooting will also return, as well as active reloads. A new feature will also be coming called Combat Knife which can be used for melee attacks and offers new executions.
As for weaponry, there’s a handful of new weapons such as the Dropshot and Buzzkill weapons, with the former firing explosive drills, and the latter firing ricocheting sawblades. Of course, the chainsaw rifle will also be in the game so you can enjoy some saw-powered slaughters.
