EVE ONline

Today marks a huge day for EVE Online as for the first time in thirteen years the game will be completely free for everyone.

Announced earlier this year CCP announced that come November they’ll be making EVE Online completely free to play with a completely new player experience that’s been revamped. In addition a number of other updates will be arriving too.

The game, which has broken records with some of the biggest battles ever seen in a MMO is finally available to play with no subscription needed. Featuring hundreds of thousands of other players, now is a fantastic time to test the waters and see what the fuss is all about.

Introducing EVE Online: Ascension, a brand new expansion for the game which introduces Clone States, a feature that’s done away with free trial accounts allowing any past, present, or future player to jump right in.

These clone states come in two forms. Omega clones act similar to current active EVE characters, with unlimited access to skill progression and rapid skill training. Alpha clones on the other hand will be the new base state for players and will be available to any character at any time for free.

Alpha clones will be able to train and use a specific set of skills to fly some of the most often-used ships into battle – Tech 1 frigates, destroyers, and cruisers. Alpha’s can also access trading, industry, and exploration skills to explore and harvest the universe to eventually construct their own war machines.

EVE Online is a very special game. Our single shard server means that every player truly affects every other, whether through economics, resource gathering, direct combat or social interaction,” notes Executive Producer Andie Nordgren. “This in turn means that our universe is more interesting, more exciting and more dangerous with each additional citizen.”

Now, to break it down more simply. EVE Online isn’t going free-to-play. These clone states simply separate subscribers from free users but not in a way that disadvantages those who don’t pay. Omega clones will basically be your usual subscriber with access to everything, Alpha’s will only be able to train in a few skills, but will still be vital in battles and other happenings in EVE Online.

Here’s an interesting break-down on the whole ordeal.

The simple fact of the matter is that EVE Online is now free for anyone to jump in and play, and while the experience may seem limited, as an Alpha, you’ll likely be a vital part of any EVE Online adventure.
