New Combat Trailer Released for Torment: Tides of Numenera

Torment: Tides of Numenera is story-intensive, much like it’s predecessor, Planescape: Torment. However, occassionally the fates can conspire against you. Your silver tongue may turn to lead or an event may not pan out as expected.

This is all down to a simple roll of the dice, and sometimes you gamble and lose. Talking your way out of a situation or manipulating your environment to resolve a situation without bloodshed should be your first port of call. But when diplomatic negotiations fail you’ll have to fight your way out.

This new trailer shows how to do just that.

Giving a brief overview of the different combat styles available shows just how much there is to this game to explore. Using spells, deception, items or just sheer brute force to destroy your enemies is just a few ways of dealing with things.

The talking to certain enemies to convince them to stop fighting or join your side in the battle is a unique mechanic. It makes great addition and opens up even more possibilities. It further illustrates that combat isn’t always necessary but sometimes unavoidable. Being able to target the enemy’s leader and defeating them first causing the others to scatter may be preferable to slaughtering them all.

Dying in most RPGs often result in seeing those two feared words, “Game Over”, but in Tides of Numenera that’s not the case. Dying and being transported to your character’s mind to the Castoff Labyrinth to discover new information and story adds even more depth to explore. It begs the question if dying at certain points and surviving others will result in different consequences for those actions. What information is locked away deep in your character’s mind?

You don’t always have to kill to succeed, but sometimes you might have to die. Afterall, what’s one life worth?

Torment: Tides of Numenera is set for release on PC, Xbox One and PS4 February 28.
