With the rise of the smart home many companies are hoping to offer cutting edge tech which often comes with a clunky hub you’ll need to shove into a wall outlet at some point. There’s nothing really stylish about smart home tech, sure your room can glow purple whenever you start watching Netflix, but it’s hardly a center piece to wrap up a room.

In comes The Orb, the latest smart home gadget that hopes to not only be functional, but also incredibly stylish (if you’re a fan of the Unknown that is), and it’s seeking funding on IndieGoGo right now.

So what’s so special about The Orb? Well not only does it look like something Mulder and Skully would wet their pants over, it also has several functionalities to make light more of a luxury and not just a necessity.

With a stunning Nordic design and human-centric technology, The Orb becomes more than just a light thanks to intelligent lighting that adapts to whatever situation you may need it for. Whether it’s dim-lit mood lighting, or brilliant white productivity inducing light, The Orb has it all. This is done by offering three zones of lighting that offer dynamic lighting profiles, whether its light that beams upwards towards the ceiling to create a spread of light, light directly from the centre of the Orb for something a little more moody, or downward facing light offering focus on a certain area of the room.

In addition to the lighting zones, colour also plays an interesting part in The Orb offering warmer tones or even funky colours to brighten up your evening. To make things better, you don’t have to rely on an app to make The Orb function as a dedicated light switch allows you choose from some pre-defined “moods”. Of course an app is also available which allows you to tailor these moods and create your own.

Now, this all sounds pretty wonderful, right? But how much is it going to cost you? Well The Orb is currently seeking $50,000 to make it a reality and currently offers several options for those wanting more control over their lighting.

For a single Orb you’ll be looking at forking out around $160 if you’re quick enough, the not so super early bird price will set you back $190, and finally if you miss out on all of the early bird offers, you can pick up an Orb for $289. In addition, you can also pick up a multi pack which will allow you to deck out your house with an entire series of UFOs.
