This morning Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that its virtual reality headset, PS VR had surpassed all expectations with a current sell through of 915,000 units as of February 19, 2017.
In a press release, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Andrew House had ambitious claims, saying that “we firmly believe PlayStation VR will take the lead position in the VR market,” which isn’t too much of a long shot. Of course, the PlayStation VR has the advantage of being compatible with the PlayStation 4 which currently has an install base of 50 million as of December last year.
In addition, as of February 19, players who own a PlayStation VR have a choice of over 100 titles and experiences globally, with publishers themselves increasing to more than 360. Apparently there are also over 220 software titles and content in development for the PS VR including the upcoming Ace Combat title, Gran Turismo Sport, and Final Fantasy XV.
It’ll be interesting to see if VR is the focus of Sony’s E3 briefing this year.
