With less than a week away from the release of the newest, and final, Dark Souls DLC, Bandai Namco has launched a new trailer that holds a TON of new information.
Along with the new trailer, we received some new images that we will comb through as well. But first, without wasting any more of your time, here’s the newest trailer for the Ringed City DLC. Read on for a quick breakdown of the trailer and to see the new images as well.
Check it out below:
So… How awesome was that?! From Software seems to be tying up a lot of loose ends with this final batch of content. From the variety of locations and enemies, to the bosses (I assuming there will be at least 3), to the insane spells and weapons we might be able to get our hands on, this looks to be a promising conclusion for the series.
The trailer opens with scenes from the Ashes of Ariandel DLC and the Painter saying:
“Ashen one, thy gift of flame has taken root, and Uncle Gale will soon bring the pigment. Pigment, coloured like the dark soul of man.”
Now, for those of you that have played the first DLC, we know that Gale is after the Dark Soul. We also know that this DLC will focus on your quest to find the Dark Soul as well. The line, “the flame has taken root”, does this confirm that this content is in fact going to take place directly after the events of the final boss fight?
It would make sense. The final boss is found at the Kiln of the First Flame, and we know from the trailers and images that this is in fact where part of, if not the beginning of this new content takes place. However, it’s referred to as the Dreg Heap, though the architecture is exactly the same, but I digress.
The line “the flame has taken root” I think, refers to the linking of the fire, or even, the usurpation of the fire, both of which are ending choices in the game. You can link the fire and continue the cycle, OR you can usurp the fire and pretty much become a hollowed king, this is also the most badass ending choice in the game.
So, we know that our character and Gale both seek the Dark Soul, and it has been confirmed he will be a summon for at least one boss fight, the one with the demon bat. I think it is safe to say that the Painter is trying to tell us a new age is coming with “pigment coloured like the dark soul of man”. Perhaps, Gale intends to find the Dark Soul in order to stop the cycle and create a new age of man? The next part in the trailer is a black screen with the Pilgrim saying, “the close of the age of fire”.
I think we’re onto something here.
Moving on, the Pilgrim then says, “The Ringed City is said to be at worlds end, past this heap of rubbish”, referring to the Dreg Heap. The trailer then shows familiar images and scenes from the previous trailer, until… We are shown a glimpse of a statue of a bearded king holding a crown over a shrivelled, begging corpse.
This HAS to be the Great Lord Gwyn, and the begging corpse is probably that of a pygmy. We know from an item description from this new DLC for the Small Envoy Banner, that Gwyn gifted the Ringed City to the pygmies.
“For the pygmies, who took the dark soul, the Great Lord gifted the Ringed City, an isolated place at world’s end, and his beloved youngest daughter, promising her that he would come for her when the day came.”
Directly after that we are shown, again, the black-haired, white-robed woman holding or resting on part of a giant egg. There is a strong chance this is the missing heavenly daughter of Gwyn, Gertrude. If you reference the item description above, he gifted the pygmies the Ringed City AND his youngest daughter. I mean, world’s end sounds like a pretty safe place to hide your kid. The giant egg? We will come back to that in a moment.
Now after this the trailer moves pretty fast and we are shown a barrage of new enemies, spells and more. We also hear another new NPC, Rapp, describing the Dreg Heap:
“Mangled remnants from every age and every land..”
We see a new form of the Dark Sun Symbol Knights, slamming down two gigantic swords one after the other trying to catch you underneath them. We see a new spider-like looking enemy chasing you down with two crystal looking staffs. We catch a glimpse of a new shield type weapon that has two pieces, which can be combined to form a giant wall in front of your character and then used to run enemies down with.
We are also shown the demon bat boss, again. THEN, we get to see either an enemy NPC or possibly a boss or mini boss wielding some insanely badass spells. Lighting bow and arrows and a group of staffs and spears materialise out of no where, erupting from the ground towards you.
Finally, the last image we are shown, brings us back to the egg I had mentioned. We see a giant black and purple dragon, spread out its wings and roar as the trailer closes. This is an Archdragon!
The egg I said Gertrude was resting on? The lore of Dark Souls says that the eggs were believed to contain the Archdragons, the oldest and strongest of them all. The ones that supposedly went extinct before the events of the original Dark Souls. Between the scenes of Gertrude (it has to be her), the grey giant which is confirmed to be the Judicator, and now this image of the dragon, I think it is safe to say the Archdragons are back and in a big way.
With all of this new footage and images its hard to not get excited about the upcoming DLC! Luckily for everyone, we only have to wait a few more days. Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City drops worldwide on March 28, it’s time to finish what we started.
As promised here as the new images I teased earlier:
