Need another Japanese RPG? Of course you do, and this one stems from the popular Valkyria franchise.
SEGA has announced that they are bringing Valkyria Revolution to the West this June. The game will launch on June 27 in North America and in Europe on June 30. You’ll be able to snag the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One digitally and physically for $39.99 and if you’re one of the few still holding on to your PS Vita, you can pick this game up for the same price, however, only a digital version will be available.
Valkyria Revolution will change up the combat a bit from the Valkyria Chronicles franchise. This title will focus more on mixing real-time combat and tactical strategy. You’ll see more of a melee focused game with some spellcasting thrown in, compared to the turn-based strategy of previous titles.
In case you’re wondering if you need to play the previous games to be able to enjoy this one, Valkyria Revolution takes place in an alternate timeline. This should allow you to jump into the franchise here with no worry. SEGA provided this breakdown of the story:
“In the wake of a revolution, Jutland’s elite soldiers, the Vanargand, must band together to defeat the Ruzi Empire and stop death itself–the Valkyria. This grizzled anti-Valkyria squad is equipped with advanced mana weaponry and has the powerful ability to wield ragnite spells to combat this terrifying threat. The unit is comprised of soldiers who have a high affinity for ragnite, and even Jutland’s own Princess Ophelia has joined the ranks. The princess carries the utmost love for her country and has answered the call of duty to liberate those who are suffering from the Ruzi’s tyranny. However, Amleth Grønkjær, the commanding officer of Vanargand hides a terrible secret. Is he friend or foe to the country he has sworn to protect?”
Pre-ordering the game will get you the launch version known as the Vanguard Edition. If you’re in the Americas the Vanguard Edition will fetch you a 12-track soundtrack by renowned Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Stella Glow) and a vanguard pin. The edition in Europe, however, will only get you the soundtrack.
