Here’s Everything we Know so Far About SteamWorld Dig 2

In the latest episode of Image & Form’s “The Engine Room”, Lead Designer of SteamWorld Dig 2, Robert Olsén answered some fan questions about their upcoming title.

The video, which can be seen below runs through a number of questions Image & Form have received since they announced the game during Nintendo’s “Nindies” showcase. However for a quick rundown, here’s what we know about the game so far:

It might not be a Nintendo Switch exclusive

So far, it’s only been announced for the Nintendo Switch so we could be looking at the platform’s first big third party exclusive. That said, the developers made clear recently that they’re exploring other options and it may not be Switch exclusive (even on day one).

The sequel will be bigger than the original

The game will be like the original but much bigger. The developers say it’s going to be “huuuuuuuge, with more worlds, more variation between worlds and full of secrets”. There will also be a huge amount of variation in the way people play the game because weapons and upgrades can be customised in different ways.

It will launch this summer

The game is currently slated for a summer release but I wouldn’t hold your breath. Developer Image and Form have consistently pushed back launch dates and they sound a little unsure whenever they state the launch window out loud…

It MIGHT be getting a physical release

In an AMA on Reddit the developer indicated they were in talks with distributors around a possible physical run of the game. Now, the game is planned as digital only but after the success of SteamWorld Collection they’re open to physical distribution too.

No more procedural generation

The biggest change for the sequel is that the procedural level generation of the original is gone. Instead, all the levels of SteamWorld Dig 2 are curated to allow a much more structured experience.

There could be a demo

They have a demo that is being shown at trade shows but there aren’t plans to bring this to the Nintendo eShop currently. It’s possible but the amount of effort this would needs means the developers are looking for a strong indication of interest before doing this.

It will support Switch exclusive features

The game will make use of the HD rumble features on the Switch.

This is the first sequel to a SteamWorld game

We’ve had SteamWorld Tower Defence, SteamWorld Heist and SteamWorld Dig but this is the first time the games have ever had a sequel. It’ll be interesting to see how well the developer, Image and Form, can deliver the sequel.

You play as Dorothy

Dorothy will be familiar to those that played the original SteamWorld Dig as she was the merchant that helped Rusty, the game’s protagonist. After the events of the first game Dorothy moves to a new town – cue sequel!

Soundtrack will likely be available

The developers are keen to make the soundtrack available after launch. It’s ‘very different’ from any soundtrack in SteamWorld games before so definitely one to watch out for.
