Having read the prequel to the Penny Dreadful Showtime series, and finding it utterly disappointing, I was apprehensive about trying to read through another one. But man, am I glad I gave it another chance.
Set at the complete opposite side of the timeline from its precursor, this Penny Dreadful: The Awakening takes place 6 months after the events of the series finale. Ethan and company are all still reeling from Vanessa Ives… departure. Meanwhile a new evil stirs and threatens the fate of all man kind. Our new baddy comes all the way from Egypt, but before I spoil anything, I’ll just leave it at that.
The art style does a great job of giving that old Victorian Era feel. It gives you the sensation like you’re reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The frames are clear and crisp and not once does it feel like it’s hard to flesh out what you’re looking at.
The writing pairs with the art style in a symbiosis of sorts. They blend well together, delivering an overall strong comic. The only thing that is slightly disappointing is the whole “doomsday” story arc.
While it’s original to the series I don’t think it will feel new to the readers. We’ll just say it’s like Penny Dreadful / The Mummy crossover, that’s the best way to describe it. Though the story is nothing ground breaking, this comic is certainly a redemption from its predecessor.
Penny Dreadful: The Awaking #1 hits comic stores and digital platforms on April 5, 2017.
