Streets of Rogue Monkeying its Way on to Steam Early Access

The “world’s only RPG rouguelike action stealth shooter brawler co-op megagame”, or Streets of Rogue for short, has been picked up by indie publisher tinyBuild and is heading over to Steam early access this Friday (March 10).

I know what you’re thinking, “not another bloody pixel-art dungeon crawler!”, but Streets of Rogue has just as much in common with Syndicate, GTA and Hitman as it does with Nuclear Throne and The Binding of Isaac. The action takes places in a bustling procedurally-generated city, populated with a huge variety of AI characters who go about their daily business and mostly leave you alone unless first provoked. There’s everything from shop keepers and bar tenders, to scientists and doctors, to cops and criminals.

To progress to the next district, you have to complete randomised missions such as rescuing or neutralising specific persons, nicking stuff, or turning things on or off. How you approach these objectives is entirely up to you, though will largely be influenced by your character selection and the loot you find or buy.

You can sneak, steal, hack, bribe, threaten, drug, and stealth kill; plus there’s tonnes of ways to create distractions. Or you can go in gung ho-style, slaughtering everyone and blasting your way through walls and doors. You can even recruit NPCs as homies. Or as the official blurb explains:

“Will you play as a soldier who shoots first and asks questions later? A stealthy scientist who uses chloroform and tranquilizer darts to silently take down the opposition? A genial bartender who can talk his way past the most intimidating of guards? Or how about a hyper-intelligent gorilla, rescuing other caged gorillas to form a small mobilized gorilla army?”

I played an alpha build back in November and was suitably impressed with its direction, ambition and sense of freedom. It’s silly, funny and anarchic, yet surprisingly intelligent and involved. It also boasts local and online co-op and an insane amount of playable characters and items. Even better, you can play as a banana-loving gorilla – need I say more? Anyway, check out the awesome trailer below.

Streets of Rogue is coming to PC, Mac and Linux.
