Activision has announced that it’s working on a Cinematic Universe of its own based around the acclaimed Call of Duty series.
Following the announcement that Activision Blizzard has launched its own producton studio last year, the company has revealed more details on its plans to launch a Call of Duty cinematic universe. Kick-started by Marvel, a cinematic universe is a shared universe in which the events of each film has a knock-on effect on others. The reason this works so well for Marvel is because of the sheer variety of characters within the Marvel universe itself.
For Call of Duty on the other hand, with so many games spanning so many different timelines, I’m struggling to see how this would work and become something more than just a series of war movies.
Activision are calling this a “near term” plan where the studio hopes to produce multiple Call of Duty films as well as TV shows. The first movie is set to begin production in 2018.
Speaking with The Guardian, Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, the co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios, revealed more details on this plan, saying that it’s been in the works for a while.
“We have plotted out many years,” Sher tells the Guardian. “We put together this group of writers to talk about where we were going. There’ll be a film that feels more like Black Ops, the story behind the story. The Modern Warfare series looks at what it’s like to fight a war with the eyes of the world on you. And then maybe something that is more of a hybrid, where you are looking at private, covert operations, while a public operation is going on.”
“It’s going to have the same sort of high-adrenaline, high-energy aesthetic as the game, but it’s not a literal adaptation. It’s a much more broad and inclusive, global in scope … a big, tentpole Marvel-esque movie,” added Van Dyk.
Activision’s first foray into TV and film production was of course the Skylanders Academy series for Netflix, which is fantastic in its own right, however creating an engaging and kid-friendly TV show is way different from creating a compelling war movie.
Of course, we all know how well video game movies have become over the past couple of years. We had high hopes that the Assassin’s Creed movie would be great, and that just wasn’t.
