BioWare Acknowledges Issue with Portrayal of Transgender Character

BioWare are making changes to Mass Effect: Andromeda NPC Hainly Abrams following feedback from the game’s community.

When the playable character meets Hainly, a transgender woman, she immediately divulges information about her previous identity in the Milky Way galaxy. Fans remarked that it would be very unlikely for someone who has transitioned to talk about this sensitive subject in such an offhand way.

Fans were also disappointed by Hainly describing the Milky Way galaxy as a unwelcoming place for transgender people.

After consulting members of the transgender community, BiowWare decided to introduce prerequisites before Hainly shares this information. The changes to the character now mean that Hainly will only speak of her past once the playable character has earned her trust.

As well as apologising in their statement, BioWare admitted that Hainly was not included in a “caring or thoughtful way”

The poor portrayal of Hainly will have shocked many fans as BioWare is widely considered to have a very inclusive attitude towards LGBTQ+ characters. They were praised in 2014 for the thoughtful execution of Cremisius “Krem” Aclassi in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
