Thor Ragnarok Trailer-Breakdown

The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has finally been released and man is it action packed! So, lets take a closer look and see if we can’t figure out just what the hell happened to our favourite Norse god.

But first, to avoid spoiling it for anyone, watch the trailer below, then continue with our breakdown. If you’ve already watched it, what the hell, it’s here, just watch it again!

OK, now that we’re all on the same page, lets dive in.

The trailer opens with Thor, bound and chained, dropped into a giant chasm…

Now, its hard to say now, but I’m going to assume this could possibly be Hel or Niflheim. For those of you unaware, these are two places ruled by Thor: Ragnarok’s main villainess, Hela. Pretty much Marvel’s version of the Norse Goddess of death, Hel, Hela is Asgardian’s equivalent.

In the comics, Hela was the child of Loki (an earlier incarnation of him, that was later killed in the previous Ragnarok) and the giantess Angrbooa. Born in Jotunheim, when she came of age, Odin appointed her Goddess of Death and ruler over the dead who resided in Hel and Niflheim. She is a main adversary of Thor throughout the comic as she is constantly trying to expand her power over the dead that dwell in Valhalla.

Anyways, I digress. Back to the trailer…

“Now I know what you’re thinking. ‘How did this happen'” Thor says, as we are treated to our first introduction of Hela.

YEA. This bitch caught Mjolnir!!! AND not only did she catch it…

She breaks it…

Like a lot…

As in, I don’t think any amount of super glue is going to put that shit back together.

Obviously, this is some serious power Thor will be combating in the film. Mjolnir is powerful but it’s not indestructible. In the comics, Thor’s hammer has been broken, sliced, blown up, or, in one instance, vaporized a total of SIX times. Granted each time it was some how reassembled or brought back, but still, it has been done.

Moving on..

The trailer moves to Asgard and we see Hela, surrounded by Asgardian soldiers, as she says “Asgard, is dead..”

BOOM! She blows that all up too. We see Thor trying to withstand the flames and then the trailer cuts to him falling out of the sky…

Now, this is where the trailer gets REALLY good. Pay attention to that green portal like cloud in the bottom right corner.

We see those green cloud-like things in this clip too. I believe, after Hela destroys Thor’s hammer and Asgard she some how teleports him to this planet. We know that they incorporated parts of Planet Hulk into this film, and that’s obvious from the trailer as well, but we’ll get to that in a moment. My point is, depending on how close the movie follows this comic arc, Thor is sent to the planet Sakaar!

Thor is then captured and brought before the Grand Master.

At the same time the trailer cuts to what looks like Lady Sif, on the back of a Griffon (badass) flying towards Hela.

We see a slow-mo of Hela throwing a sword, I’m assuming towards Sif or her feathered mount and then the trailer shows her, along with a bunch of other Asgardians and Griffons falling out of the sky.

At this point it is clear that there will be some major, planet sized destruction going on in this film. Kevin Feige himself has stated that Thor: Ragnarok will be the most important film of Marvel’s Phase 3. This trailer is making that blatantly clear.

The trailer then cuts back to Thor being dragged to a cell and locked into a chair.

The Grandmaster asks “What have you brought me today? Tell me.” The mysterious woman that captured Thor replies, “A contender.”

Next we get a very exciting glimpse of Heimdall slaying an alien and sporting a new, rogue-like look! I’m digging the dreds man.

Next, we catch a really quick glimpse of Karl Urban as Skurge!!

More commonly known as The Executioner, Skurge is another powerful villain from the comics. Generally he wields a double-bladed axe that has the power to create dimensional rifts. Whether he will have that in the film or not remains to be clear. Usually, he is used by the Enchantress and Loki as a pawn to carry out whatever nefarious plans they can come up with. Being that Loki is also shown in the trailer it won’t be surprising if we see some form of that relationship and befriending happen on the big screen.

However, he also joined the heroes of Asgard in their mission to hell and sacrifices his ax to destroy Naglfar, the ship of the dead, and delay Ragnarok. He also sacrifices himself, by holding up a bridge so the rest of the heroes can escape Hel’s forces. Coincidence? I think not! How much of this has been adapted into the film is a mystery but hey, if nothing else, you learned something today.

We are treated to a montage of battles taking place all over, simultaneously. From what looks like somewhere on planet Sakaar, to Hela doing a back flip over some Asgardian soldiers to Loki, making an entrance, flipping a couple daggers.. Show off.

We see a Colosseum, puffs of coloured smoke and the Grand Master says “Its main event time.” As we see Thor enter the rings, with those luscious blond locks all cut off.

“And now I give you, your incredibleeee..” *BOOM!* the Hulk bursts through the doors.

All decked out in fancy armor and two giant friggin hammers. “YES!!” Thor exclaims, the crowd goes quiet, the Grand Master loses his smile, and, this next clip is interesting..

We see the Grand Master in a luxurious room over looking the arena, BUT Loki is there as well! Was it part of his plan to have Thor there? Did he come to Sakaar to make a deal for Thor’s freedom, only to arrive too late?? Maybe he’s on vacation? WHAT IS HE DOING THERE?!?!

Thor states, “We know each other, hes a friend from work!” Anndddd Hulk shoots him this look…

He’s maaaaaaddddd

“Oh come on..” Thor exclaims. Hulk charges towards him, he back steps then accepts the challenge and they charge towards each other!

And that’s it! The title flashes across the screen and fades out. Clearly there is a ton that will be happening in this film and we are left with a bunch of unanswered questions. Marvel looks like they will be keeping their promise however, this is clearly going to be a major event in the MCU! Not to mention we didn’t see any sign of Dr. Strange but its been confirmed he will be in the film as well. After seeing this I can only imagine what his role will be. Personally I’d love to see a fight between the Sorcerer Supreme and Hela.

Get hyped, Thor: Ragnarok releases November 3, 2017!!
