Penny Dreadful #2 Review – Werewolves and Mummies and Zombies OH MY!

*WARNING* potential spoilers for those that have not read the first issue!

Penny Dreadful #2 is a great step in the right direction. Using the momentum of the first issue, this instalment keeps the ball rolling and picks up the pace, delivering a most enjoyable read.

This one crams a lot into 30 pages. We get a taste of the mummy’s, Belial, power (he can raise the effing dead!), as well as get to see Ethan in all his hairy glory. I know that sounds gross but I’m referring to him making the full change into a Werewolf, come on people, get your minds out of the gutter.

There is a hint of foreshadowing near the end involving Ms. Ives possible return, but I’ll say no more on that.

While the story continues to be a fast paced, fun read, the art came up a little short for me this time around. It could just be my opinion, maybe I’m just being a dick, but for me the art missed its mark in this second issue. Honestly, it just felt rushed and sloppy. The first gave us some really well done drawings; details were there. Penny Dreadful #2 however, just felt like they were running out of time and rushed through the art.

The dialogue is easy enough to read, nothing really stuck out or felt off. Aside from one over used, cult rising up, “This is our day!” speech. #cheesy

For the most part, this series continues to be a fun read and a welcome expansion to the Penny Dreadful universe. Penny Dreadful #3 drops June, 2017!
