Columbia Pictures and Rovio Entertainment have announced The Angry Birds Movie 2 which is set to hit theatres on September 20, 2019.
Columbia and Rovio have announced a new movie is on the way, though this time it’ll be lead by a brand new creative team. The first movie landed in the top spot in over fifty countries in May 2016 becoming second-highest-grossing video game feature adaptation of all time.
You’re probably also wondering why the release date is so specific and that’s because the movie will launch along side the tenth anniversary of the Angry Birds franchise, so if you didn’t feel old today, now you certainly will.
Angry Birds took the mobile gaming market by storm back in 2009 and quickly became an iconic brand spawning several iterations of the game with some pretty fantastic partnerships. Let’s not even mention the incredible amount of merch which came from the game.
So it’s hardly surprising that The Angry Birds Movie 2 is happening. This time however the sequel will be directed by Thurop Van Orman (Adventure Time) and co-directed by John Rice (Rick and Morty). Writing the movie will be Peter Ackerman (Ice Age) with John Cohen (Despicable Me) producing.
“We are thrilled to be teaming up again with Sony Pictures after the fantastic cooperation in the first movie, and I can’t wait to experience the new journey in the upcoming film,” Rovio Entertainment CEO Kati Levoranta said in a statement. “Rovio is continuing to focus on creating exciting new stories and experiences around our games, and we’re eager to take fans back into the vibrant Angry Birds world on the big screen.”
