Square Enix has revealed that despite the end in partnership between themselves and developer Io-Interactive, the Hitman series could indeed live on.

When Square Enix announced its departure from the partnership many questioned the future of the Hitman series which rebooted as an episodic experience last year. The series as a whole was widely praised by critics and fans and the surprise announcement shocked everyone.

Now, the future of the series is the biggest talking point as Io-Interactive announce layoffs, but according to Square Enix, the series could continue provided someone steps in to also purchase the IP.

Square’s Yosuke Matsuda told investors during a briefing that “Because the firm is engaged in the development of Hitman and other renowned titles, we are negotiating with prospective external investors capable of ensuring that these titles carry on.”

Now it’s just a case of waiting to see whether another publisher could swoop in and grab Hitman and its developer, though this does spark some more questions like, is Square Enix selling the entire Hitman IP including titles like Hitman GO?

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
