At D23 Expo yesterday, Disney showed off a new look at Star Wars Episode VII: The Last Jedi via a behind the scenes trailer.
The trailer shows off a dizzying amount of new creatures including a chubby penguin-owl, a weird crystal fox and a glimpse at Chewbacca getting his hair curled. There’s testimonials from the cast and crew all emphasising that Episode VII is taking the series in a fresh, new direction. At one point Daisy Ridley states that “despite everyone knowing that this film is the second part of a trilogy, it feels like its own standalone thing“.
There’s a lot to take in as the trailer shows off some possible story beats. A rebel base is destroyed, Kylo Ren is sporting a gnarly facial scar and there’s a shot of Finn disguised as a First Order officer.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Last Jedi opens in theatres December 15 (UK) and will feature Luke Skywalker in a more prominent role than in Episode VII. The late Carrie Fischer will reprise her role as Princess Leia and will also be a big part of the story this time around.
