Atari have released a first look at their new console, the Ataribox and yeah, it’s a good looking piece of tech. Writing in a blog post, Atari outlined their plans for the console, stating “Our objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.

The console hearkens back to classic Atari designs of the past, utilising wood and glass to inspire a retro vibe while managing to still look like a modern console. There will be HDMI ports, 4xUSB ports and an SD slot housed within the body of the Ataribox with plans to release two editions, one wood and one black/red.

In terms of what we can expect from specs there are few details given. The post reads “As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content.

Exactly what “current gaming content” means exactly remains unclear but its certainly an interesting step from the industry veterans. Check out the new design below. Will you be buying an Ataribox on release? Let us know in the comments.

Have any specs been released for it? Until I see specs, I have no opinion about it… other than … 'why?'.

Don't get me wrong. I've loved every Atari system I've owned (2600, Jaguar, Lynx), but it's been a while since Atari's been in the mix and in that time, the games landscape has changed significantly.

Until there's a whole lot more info available, I'll have to reserve judgement.

This looks like some Android console. I doubt very much that this thing will get any actual custom AAA games, or be anywhere near a PS4 / X1 performance level. So… probably Pi hardware inside…
