Welcome to The Indie Fix, where we delve into the exciting world of indie gaming to have a gander at promising works in progress, weird and wonderful freeware offerings, or recently published games that may have slipped under your radar!
In this week’s Indie Fix we take a look at a charming little narrative driven game called How to Make Your Grandpa Happy. In this game, you guessed it, you’re tasked with cheering up your grandpa after an accident leaves him with amnesia.
The game is really polished and does an excellent job at conveying the emotions of a family left shocked and confused by a sudden accident in the family. Granted, the writing is a little forced at times and isn’t as natural as it could be but all in all it does a decent job of describing the situation. One of the slickest touches in the game is how the dialogue between the adults (you play as the young grandchild) continues as you’re told to go and ‘play’ outside. It’s a great way of continuing the narrative while leaving you explore – and at the same time shows us just how much little ears must hear.
Each of the locations in the game are illustrated through showing the shadows cast across the floor by the characters in the story. I don’t want to spoil anything but the vast majority of the narrative plays out in this way. It looks neat and the quality of the environments and photographs you look at later in the game benefits from the team not having to animate every scene.
The main purpose of the game is to complete your grandpa’s photo album in order to cheer him up (he never got around to doing it unfortunately). As you slot the photos into the right place in the album by listening to clues in the dialogue you can overhear, you begin to get a feeling for the life your grandpa must have lived. Like any life, some parts seem overwhelmingly happy and some parts are touched with a very heavy sadness but to the credit of the developer all of it feels real.
How to Make Your Grandpa Happy is a touching little story about love, loss and getting older. I can’t recommend it enough.
